Poverty, hunger, and homelessness in America are much more common despite being the wealthiest nation in the world. Poverty is well-defined as having inadequate income to provide the food, shelter and clothing needed to preserve good health. Hunger is quite simply not knowing where your next meal will be coming from, to a certain extent simply being food insecure. Homelessness is homeless who are most often unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure, and adequate housing. To live below the poverty line means not having enough to feed and clothe a family, which is dependent on household size that averages the amount of income required. There are essentials for a minimum standard of living that revolve around food, shelter, social resources and connections with society. Essentials for food either involve growing the food independently or purchasing food through another provider such as a supermarket or farmer s markets. Essentials for shelter would incorporate a housing complex with running water, electricity and heating. Essentials of social resources include medical facilities, food subsidies, and government assistance which in turn is also examples of connection with society. Poverty greatly affects these essentials due to primary lack of financial stability and a secure shelter. Individuals that are in poverty become food insecure cannot provide proper housing for their family nor can afford proper social resources or essential connections with society.
